E. M. "Pete" Peterson

A "Scouter's Scouter" has passed from our ranks.  Most of us knew him as "Pete" or if we were one of his many Scouts we might now call him "Mr. Pete."  Pete served this council as president from 1981 to 1983.  He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver and the District Award of Merit.  He Served as District Chairman, District Commissioner in the Mesquite District and Council Camping Chairman.  However, without a doubt, his favorite role was that of Scoutmaster and it was fitting that the pall bearers at his funeral were his own grown-up Scouts: Mike Smith, Dr. Charles Wiley, Bill Bailey, Vince Titzman, Gilbert Soliz and Andy Peterson.

Ernest M. "Pete" Peterson, a retired vice president and general manager of Flournoy Drilling Company, a member of Faith Church UCC, a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Alice Optimist Club, the Alice Airport Advisory Board, the Jim Wells County Appraisal Board, formerly active in the International Association of Drilling Contractors, and a past president of the Alice Chamber of Commerce and Orange Grove Senior Center, died Nov. 13, 2003. He was 77.

Survivors include his wife, Candi; five daughters, Denise Lechner of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Cindy Rabalais and Debbie Burns, both of Alice, Sami Weatherall of Bourg, La., and Beverly Long of Sandia; two sons, Bill Peterson of Orange Grove and Kenny Carter of Corpus Christi; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.  ...And a host of Scouting friends who will miss him.

SOFTLY FALLS THE LIGHT OF DAY

AS OUR CAMPFIRE FADES AWAY --

SILENTLY EACH SCOUT SHOULD ASK,

HAVE I DONE MY DAILY TASK ---

HAVE I KEPT MY HONOR BRIGHT,

CAN I GUILTLESS SLEEP TONIGHT --

HAVE I DONE AND HAVE I DARED,

EVERYTHING TO BE PREPARED --

  I've gone home
