Event/Group: Salvation Army
Date: Anytime
Service Needed: Our project involves situations where customers decline staying in our shelters because they have long term friends (pets) who are not allowed to stay with their owner inside. The construction of a kennel would allow the owners to stay in the shelter, and maintain their pets in a protected environment. Responsibility for pets provides training and security for homeless people, and research has shown pet owners re-insert into the community quicker than non-pet people.

We currently have 2 homeless dogs at the shelter which are cared for by the clients and stay in the back yard. Project could include the following: tree trimming, working over the existing beds, adding a shaded sitting area, building dog houses and any other improvements that may be suggested to make this area more enjoyable for the men living at the shelter.

Event/Group: Adopt-a-spot
Date: Once monthly for a year
Service Needed: Maintaining litter pickup along one of 10 segments of the Corpus Christi Bay shoreline. This would be a commitment with city leaders to adopt a segment of shoreline for regular litter maintenance. Beachgoer trash is handled by the state’s seasonal Adopt-a-Beach program, however debris that flushes through the city’s stormwater system into the bay backwashes against the shoreline and requires more consistent attention. In exchange for the commitment, the city will provide trash bags, and litter pickup on selected cleanup dates, and will provide a sign on site recognizing the service organization that makes the project commitment.

Event/Group: Garden Estates Assisted Living Community
Date: Anytime
Service Needed: Help with landscaping for the facility. There are a couple of enclosed courtyard areas that are in great need of being redone. Basically the planting needs to be redone with landscape materials, rock, mulch, planting materials, etc. being provided and brought in. It would really provide some much needed visual and aesthetic relief for the residents - some of whom no longer drive and are not able to get around well. The facility really is a small community and the benefit to the residents will be great.
