For 21 consecutive years, the South Texas Council, Boy Scouts of America, in association with H-E-B Food Stores and local food banks, has conducted our annual good turn, Scouting for Food. This annual food drive is designed to help the food banks and pantries across our 17 South Texas counties.
This food drive serves two purposes for the community. With the Thanksgiving Holiday around the corner, Scouts help South Texas food banks in providing a Thanksgiving meal for the less fortunate in our communities. It also gives Scouts an opportunity to exercise the third point of the Scout Law, “A Scout is Helpful.” The role of the Boy Scouts of America is to organize the food collection and make arrangements with established community distribution agencies that will warehouse and distribute the food to the needy at no cost.
As always, this November Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Ventures and Explorers will distribute bags in pre-selected sites throughout their respective communities on the first Saturday of November and will pick up the bags with donated goods on the second Saturday in November.
Scouts will be asking for nutritional non-perishable canned goods such as baby formula, peanut butter, complete packed meals, and canned goods including vegetables, meats and soups. All food collected throughout the council will stay within the community in which it was collected.
As we plan for our 22nd year it's fun to note that there are grown men, helping as volunteers, who remember their first food drive as a Tiger Cub. It won't be long until we see father and sons with this yearly good turn in common. Scouting for Food... Helping others... Working together... Serving our community... Timeless Values!
