Endowing Scouting's Future

Providing a Secure Future for Scouting

In order to provide a secure future for the South Texas Council and the many worthy character education programs it offers, a steadily growing, permanent base of wisely invested endowment funds is needed.  These investments will yield predictable annual interest income to support the Council's activities for all future generations.

The South Texas Council has a modest endowment fund in place, but more funds need to be raised in order for the endowment to grow, and for more income to be generated for our operational needs.  Gifts of all sizes are welcome and appreciated.

Endowment gifts may be made in the name of an individual, family, foundation or corporate donor.  Endowment donations may be unrestricted in nature, with the income generated being used where the need is greatest, or they may support a specific aspect of the South Texas Council and its operations.  A separately-named endowment that is unrestricted in purpose may be established with a gift of $10,000 and above.  Unless otherwise required, all South Texas Council endowment funds are invested together as a single unit.

Those who contribute endowment funds to the South Texas Council not only receive recognition locally, but also from the National Council.

The 1910 Society

Contributors of $25,000 or more are recognized as members of The 1910 Society.  There are four categories of membership:

1)  Wait Phillips, one of the first benefactors of the Boy Scouts of America and donor to the organization of almost 130,000 acres of land in New Mexico, which became Philmont Scout Ranch.  There are three categories of giving in this division:  a) minimum gift of $1,000,000 (Phillips Level); b) $5,000,000 minimum (Phillips Silver); and c) $10,000,000 minimum gift (Phillips Gold).

2)  Theodore Roosevelt, first Chief Scout Citizen, first vice president of the Boy Scouts of America and United States President, $500,000 minimum donation.

3)  Daniel Carter Beard, the first chairman of the National Court of Honor, national Scout commissioner, and author of many well-known books and stories for youth, minimum gift of $100,000.

4)  Ernest Thompson Seton, a nationally known artist and naturalist, author of the first official American Scout handbook and many other books important to Scouting, minimum gift of $25,000.

The James E. West Fellowship

Donors of $1,000 and above become members of The James E. West Fellowship.  James E. West was the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America, and he served in that position for more than three decades.

The Founders Circle

The Founders Circle, is intended to recognize deferred gifts designated for council endowment funds. With deferred giving (also called planned giving) so widely and effectively used by so many donors, the BSA wants to recognize the importance of such major gifts. Donors are recognized for gift commitments with a minimum value of $100,000. Unlike the other endowment recognition awards, a donor may qualify for membership with gifts made through:

  • Charitable bequests in a will or codicil
  • Charitable trusts, such as unitrusts, annuity trusts, and lead trusts
  • Life insurance/retirement plan designations
  • Other deferred gifts approved by the local council

As with the 1910 Society, there are four levels of membership within the Founders Circle:

  • Platinum ($1,000,000 and above)
  • Gold ($500,000 minimum)
  • Silver ($250,000 minimum)
  • Bronze ($100,000 minimum)

If you would like to find out more about solutions for your particular estate planning needs, our gift recognition program or about Scouting's endowment campaign, please submit an online request form, or contact the Council President John O. Thurston, at (361) 814-4300, extension 11 or via e-mail:  jthurston@stxbsa.org
