2010 JAMBOREE CONTINGENT LEADERSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS

Imagine 10 days of hard work with 36 of the best scouts in the South Texas Council in the heat of a Virginia summer. Imagine long, hot days of playing parent to 36 boys while they experience many of the best adventures of their young lives.

NOW, imagine seeing more than 75,000 hollering, clapping kids as the President of the United States comes to the podium in a massive arena showplace and congratulates them all on being the best of the best. Imagine your own heart pounding as you watch your boys smile and laugh and holler as loud as they can, knowing that you are experiencing it all with them.

You’ve just gotten a small glimpse of the National Scout Jamboree. It’s a glorious mix of hard work, practicing parenting and leadership skills, joy, and elation. It’s an experience of a lifetime.

In 2010, American Scouting celebrates its’ 100th Anniversary. What better way to enjoy the many sides of the Scouting program than by attending the 2010 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia with up to 100,000 scouts and scouters.  We are looking for those special leaders that will lead the two South Texas Council Contingent troops in this most excellent adventure from July 23rd to August 4th, 2010. Those leaders will come from all over the South Texas Council.
For those adult leaders that have the talent and a passion for working with scouts, this is the big time. But, there will be only six (6) adult leaders between both Jamboree troops. The applications are now available on the South Texas Council website. Download them, read them and fill them out. Then drop them off or mail them to Marty Sepulveda at the Council office.

Adult Application deadline is May 19th as we need to interview and select Jamboree Troop Leaders in preparation for Youth Application release and Troop formation. For questions, contact John Fowler, CP 361-960-4321, HP 361-852-6768, email jfowler123@earthlink.net.

NEW! Check out the video made by nine Scouts in the Capitol Area Council…you’ll be glad you did.

BELIEVE IT. LIVE IT.

From the beaches of Normandy to the streets of Fallujah, in a downtown alleyway and a Hill Country treehouse, at a running track and on a stage…in these places and others in between, you will join nine Boy Scouts out to discover what it means to BELIEVE AND TO live THE Scout Law. Meet Rwandan genocide survivor Gilbert Tuhabonye…Iraq War hero Alan Babin…a US Army rescue helicopter unit…a young woman who shows us that attitude is everything…and other everyday people who personify the timeless values of Scouting. From those who face adversity, do good deeds, or just go to work, the power of Scouting is put into practice by those who BELIEVE IT and LIVE IT.

Twelve words. Nine Scouts. One Question.

WHAT DOES THE SCOUT LAW REALLY MEAN?

Policy on Scout Participation in Political Events

Since we are in a presidential election year, it is a good time to restate the BSA’s long-standing policy regarding the participation of Scouts in political rallies and other political events.  Uniformed unit members and leaders may participate in flag ceremonies at political events and may lead the Pledge of Allegiance; however, they should retire after the ceremony and not remain on the speakers’ platform or in a conspicuous location where television viewers could construe their presence as an endorsement or symbol of support.  In addition, photos of candidates or Scouts in uniform or BSA marks and logos are not allowed in political campaign materials of any kind.

Volunteers and professionals must be alert to situations that would imply that the BSA favors one candidate over another.  Strict observance of our long-standing policy against the active participation of uniformed Scouts and leaders in political events is mandatory.

Please notify your chartered organizations and unit leaders of this policy.  Questions on the interpretation of this policy may be referred to David K. Park, national legal counsel, or the Marketing & Communications Division at 972-580-2263.

Webelos Resident Camp—Camp Karankawa, July 06-09, 2008

An awesome summer camping opportunity awaits your Webelos Scout…plans are underway for a summer camp experience like no other just for Webelos-age Scouts at Camp Karankawa, located on scenic Lake Corpus Christi near Mathis, Texas. This camp will be open ONLY to Cub Scouts who have completed the third (3rd) or fourth (4th) grades, and will provide four exciting days of outdoor fun, adventures, and advancement opportunities! The activities and program will be geared around Webelos outdoor activity badges, with time for swimming, archery, BB Guns, hiking, campfires and so much more. Check-in will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the Sunday, July 6th  and will close at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9th

The South Texas Council will have a highly energetic, qualified program staff for your Scouts. There is, however, a need for one unit leader for every four Webelos attending camp and at least two unit leaders in each campsite  who have completed Youth Protection Training.  The unit leaders may be any leader in a Cub Scout Pack or the parents of Webelos attending camp. Packs should try to send leaders for boys attending from their Pack. If a Pack is unable to provide sufficient leaders, those adults and youth attending will be grouped with others to meet the adult leader ratio and two adults per campsite requirement on a first-come, first-serve basis.  More Information...

Service Opportunities

The Scout Oath calls on us “To help other people at all times”.  The Scout Slogan reminds us to “Do a good turn daily”.  The council will occasionally post contact information on our new Service Opportunities page for listing groups looking for Scouts to perform service to the public.  Please submit service opportunities to Claudia Wright for inclusion on this page and don’t forget to report your service hours to BSA’s “Good Turn for America” website.

IS YOUR EAGLE SCOUT GRADUATING THIS YEAR?

If so, honor him by giving him an Eagle Scout Recognition Graduation Cord that he can wear with his cap & gown from the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Committee of the South Texas Council.   The Cord is a beautiful red, white and blue (woven); this cord may only be worn by Scouts that have attained the rank of Eagle and some limitations may apply.

The Honor Graduation Cords/Stoles are a popular concept on the East Coast but is gradually being introduced in parts of the Southern Region-BSA.   The idea was first seen in Texas at the Smithson Valley High School graduation ceremonies (Comal I.S.D.)  The cord is manufactured by Herff-Jones which is a national graduation ceremony manufacturer.

The Cord is not standard issue by the Boy Scouts of America, nor the NESA, but the concept has been endorsed and encouraged at the local level by many Councils across the Country. The NESA Committee for the South Texas Council, starting in 2007, is selling these Cords for $20. This includes a $10 donation to the South Texas Council Capital Campaign, “An Enduring Legacy” by each purchaser through the NESA.

Membership in the NESA is strongly encouraged, but not required, to purchase these cords. However, while most school districts in our Council now accept the wearing of these cords at graduation ceremonies based solely on attaining the rank of Eagle, some may not.   Membership in the NESA qualifies as a “nationally recognized honor society” (Portrait of a High School Graduation Ceremony, page 4- adopted by most school districts).  So please check with your principal. Also, be aware your school administration may limit the number of cords or honor awards worn (e.g., a maximum of 3).   Inquire at your school, or college, administration office for more information. Most principals will require a copy of some type of documentation of the Scout attaining the rank of Eagle before the cord is allowed to be worn during the ceremony.

You may purchase the cords through the South Texas Council Scout Office after proper identification.  For special shipping arrangements to out of area schools (i.e., Victoria, Laredo, etc.) contact Darrell Thompson at 361-887-1874.

100 Years of Scouting

In February 2010, the Boy Scouts of America will celebrate 100 years as an organization.  Founded as an outlet to prepare every eligible youth in America to become a participating citizen and leader, BSA has more than fulfilled its mission.  Today, as we celebrate our first 100 years, we not on only reflect on our rich history, but lay the foundation for a strong future, as well.  Please visit our 100 Years of Scouting website where you can learn more about this important milestone and how you can participate during the years leading to our 100th anniversary.
